Interview with L.S. FELLOWS

From far-away Spain comes my mystery author friend, L.S. Fellows, to share with us the inside story on her newest novel, Casualty of Court, that debuts in wide release on March 21.

 

To understand Casualty of Court fully, you’ll want to read The Fifth Wheel, Fellows’ short, engaging, highly acclaimed prequel.

In The Fifth Wheel, according to Fellows, during a holiday in Portugal, Fern Mortimer is seduced by a handsome restaurant manager, raising her mood and her hopes of a romantic entanglement whilst also robbing her of her usual common sense and sound judgement. Soon, Fern’s wheelchair is lying capsized in the resort’s infinity pool, a body is spotted out at sea, and nobody knows what happened to Fern Mortimer.” A man named Stefan Pereira is suspected of foul play in Fern’s disappearance.

 

The new L.S. Fellows mystery, Casualty of Court, carries on from where The Fifth Wheel ended, taking the characters back to Portugal for the trial of Stefan Pereira. I asked Fellows about the new book.

IC: So, you’ve gone from a mystery/thriller, The Fifth Wheel, to a form of the classic courtroom drama in Casualty of Court. How did that transition come about?

 

LSF: As a frustrated, would-have-loved-to-be lawyer myself, I couldn’t let him [Stefan Pereira] get away with it, could I? That doesn’t happen in my world. I’m a sucker for legal thrillers and courtroom dramas, always rooting for the underdog – assuming he/she is in the right, of course.

The trial story was inevitable, and placing it in my favourite part of the world a foregone conclusion. So, against a backdrop of sunshine and holiday fun, the court case rolls on. Mind games come into play, ratcheting up the tension. But, of course, not everyone is playing fair.

 

IC: Sounds like there will be a lot of surprises for the readers. When I said Casualty of Court is “a form of” courtroom drama, I was alluding to its peculiarities that set this novel apart from the run-of-the-mill courtroom story. What is special about Casualty of Court?

 

LSF: It’s a cosy-style saga with a hint of psychopath, a whiff of Chick-lit, a dalliance with drama, and an air of mystery. In short, I’m an ‘all-or-nothing’ writer with a healthy aversion to sitting in any one box or genre 🙂 In addition, the story is told from the viewpoint of four principal characters, each with a stake in the outcome. It mixes the suspense of a court case with their personal stories, showing how they have been influenced by life events such as abandonment, disability, and family responsibilities.

 

IC: The four principal characters tell the story in Casualty of Court. What do you have planned for those characters after the trial ends? Will you continue to hear these characters in your head?

 

LSF: Little did I expect these characters to become as much a part of my life as they have done. I can visualise each of them, I know them so well (cue Elaine Paige & Barbara Dixon). But, it doesn’t end here. I’m already several chapters into a third book and have plans for more. Writing a series is definitely addictive! They’ve got under my skin – I hope readers feel the same way too.
