RATED 4 stars by Iris Chacon
I received an advance review copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley, and I am voluntarily posting my honest opinion in this review. #Flame #NetGalley
The author describes the story this way (paraphrased):
Living among the Dragon Kings, Cain has spent lifetimes learning to distrust both mortals and Fae. He is a warrior born—and every instinct demands that he fight to keep his own kind safe.
But now an urgent warning has Cain torn for the first time between trusting a beautiful Dark Fae and resisting his primal attraction to her. [Illustration by DeviantArt]
Noreen is horrified by what her fae kind and the malevolent Others are planning for the Dragon Kings. She has always known she would risk her life for her principles, but she never imagined she would risk her heart – until she meets Cain.
Flame has several very romantic story lines involving unusual people (and creatures) finding, and fighting for, the love of their life. The many-layered novel also contains:
stories of lost love to break a reader’s heart;
action and battles between supernatural beings;
parallel worlds (well drawn by the author), sometimes reminiscent of the Never-Never world of Harry Dresden in the Jim Bucher novel series;
and a desperate life-and-death struggle to save humankind and planet earth, even though the heroes are neither humans nor earthlings themselves.
I give this book five stars for being a well-written sci-fi/fantasy romance with likable characters, despicable villains, and suspenseful action…minus one star for large sections of background information from the first 16 novels…for a net score of four stars.
In Darkest Flame, the Dark Kings have fought for centuries to preserve their dragon magic. But one of the most powerful warriors of his kind will be put to the ultimate test. Is he strong enough to resist his greatest temptations? Or will he be forced to surrender—body and soul?
Denae Lacroix is a beautiful MI5 agent on a deadly mission. Sent to the Scottish Highlands to spy on the mysterious Dreagan Industries, she discovers too late that she’s been set up—as human bait. She is an irresistible lure for a man who has not seen or touched a woman for centuries. [—quoting author Donna Grant]
